- I can't open the Guide Book to Gift Book's file
or when I do, it displays nonsense.
- Can you just mail or email me a copy?
- My library or bookstore would like to give copies of
the Guide Book to use patrons or customers. Is this ok?
1. My download didn't
work.
Different
computers are configured to download documents in different ways. As a
result:
- It can appear
that your download did not work at all.
- You may close the
Guide Book after the initial download only to have it
seemingly "disappear."
Depending
on how your browser is configured, it may not actually download the
file and automatically save to your computer's hard drive, instead
opening within your browser, so:
- If the file
opened within your browser, most have a "Save a Copy"
menu option, which will allow you to save it to a folder of your choice
to reopen in Adobe Acrobat later.
- You may also wish
to download the file directly first, which you can do by right-clicking
(on a PC) and choosing "Save Link As ..." or by
control-clicking (on a Mac) and choosing "Download Linked File."
In many cases the
file is lurking about somewhere. The file is called GB2007.pdf and
can usually be located by using your computer's various "Find" or
"Search" capabilities.
To find the file
on a PC running Windows:
- Go to the Start
Menu and click on Search. Select "For files or folders..."
as your search option.
- A dialog box with
various search options will appear. In the search box titled "Search
for files or folders named" type GB2007.pdf and click on the
button that says "Search Now." Note: Most users will want to make
sure that the "Look in:" option is set to Local Disk (C:).
- The Guide Book
to Gift Books file should appear in the results list on the right.
Click to open.
To
find the file on a Mac (OSX):
- Open the Finder,
then chose File and then Find.
- Type GB2007.pdf
in the search box. Note: Most users will want to make
sure that the "File Names" and "Macintosh HardDrive" search options are
selected.
- The Guide
Book to Gift Books file should appear in the results list. Click to
open.

3. I can't open the Guide Book to Gift Book's file or
when I do, it displays nonsense characters.
Typical
causes include:
- You are viewing
the file through your browser instead of Adobe Acrobat.
- The name of the
file has been changed to something that does not include the .pdf
extension.
- Your computer
does not understand that documents with a .pdf extension should be read
with the Adobe Acrobat Reader program.
We recommend that
you:
- Download the
file directly first, which you can do by right-clicking (on a PC) and
choosing "Save Link As ..." or by control-clicking (on
a Mac) and choosing "Download Linked File."
- Try starting
Adobe Acrobat Reader manually (by choosing it from Programs on the
Start menu if you're working on a PC) and then opening the file (by
choosing "Open" from the "File" menu) from there.
- If it then opens,
you should be able to use "Rename" to change the document title to
GB2007.pdf, in which case it should automatically launch Reader when
you open the document in future (as opposed to having to go through the
start menu to manually launch Reader). When renaming the file, you may
get a message saying that changing the extension can make the document
unstable, but that won't be a problem in this case, so go ahead and
rename it.
- If after renaming
the document, you still have to launch Reader manually to open it (or
you still get nonsense), there may be a problem with your computer
settings.
