The 1997 Allerton Institute Story: From Fireplace to Cyberspace October 26-28, 1997 Monticello, Illinois The 39th Allerton Park Institute will explore current issues related to story and storytelling for youth through scholarly presentations, hands-on workshops, and practical demonstrations. The program includes topics of interest to professionals and paraprofessionals in public and school libraries as well as teachers. Emphasis will be on the critical need to connect children with substantive narrative in order to affect their development as readers, consumers, and evaluators of literature and information in myriad forms. Betsy Hearne and Christine Jenkins, of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Janice Del Negro, of the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, have assembled a group of knowledgeable presenters that includes scholars, librarians, artists, and professional storytellers. Participants will attend formal sessions, but breaks for informal discussion and exploration of the Allerton grounds will also be incorporated. Each evening will end with music and storytelling.

The conference site, Robert Allerton Park, is located approximately 20 miles away from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, near Monticello, Illinois. Conference activities will be held at Allerton House, a 20-room Georgian mansion surrounded by formal gardens, sculpture, and vast natural areas.

The cost for the conference is $225 per person and space is limited. The fee includes registration, lodging (for Sunday and Monday nights), and meals (dinner Sunday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday; breakfast and lunch on Tuesday). Morning and afternoon refreshment breaks, as well as a social hour and reception, are also included. Special registration fees (which do not include lodging or meals) are available for U of I GSLIS students ($75) and U or I faculty and staff ($165). Conference attendees will receive 1.3 CEUs (Continuing Education credit) from the University of Illinois and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science for participation in the 1997 Allerton Institute.
