The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
	The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them to offer--so don't expect an even dozen.   Life is delicious in the town of Chewandswallow where it rains soup and juice, snows mashed potatoes, and blows storms of hamburgers-until the weather takes a turn for the worse. (BCCB 2/78)
• Bateman, Teresa. A Plump and Perky Turkey. Illus. by Jeff Shelley. Winslow, 2001 5-8 yrs
  The townspeople of Squawk Valley try to trick a turkey into being their Thanksgiving dinner, but they are taken aback when the turkey uses a few tricks of its own to evade the oven. (BCCB 11/01)
• Bauer, Joan. Hope Was Here. Putnam, 2000. Gr. 7-10
  "Teenaged Hope is a waitress extraordinaire, traveling around with her aunt Addy, a temperamental and brilliant diner cook." When they settle in a small town in Wisconsin, they are swept up in an enthusiastic political campaign in which the big-hearted diner owner hopes to be elected to office. (BCCB 9/00)
• Daly, Niki. What's Cooking, Jamela? Written and illus. by Niki Daly. Farrar, 2001. 4-7 yrs
  Jamela is helping Mama and Gogo (grandmother) plan Christmas dinner, and they start by acquiring a live chicken to fatten up for the feast. Of course, in the process of fattening, Jamela becomes attached to the chicken, which she names Christmas. (BCCB 1/02)
• Evangelista, Gloria. In Search of the Perfect Pumpkin. Illus. by Shawn Shea. Fulcrum, 2001. 6-9 yrs
  A search for the perfect pumpkin (to make the perfect pumpkin pie) escalates over several years for the narrator and his family, until they decide to dig up a patch of garden and grow their own pumpkins. (BCCB 9/01)
• Fleming, Candace. Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! Illus. by G. Brian Karas. Schwartz/Atheneum, 2002. 4-7 yrs
  Mr. McGreely is looking forward to enjoying the vegetables from his garden until he discovers three hungry bunnies, who are stealing more than their share of the garden goodies. "In a move many gardeners will recognize, he fights back, but night after night the clever rabbits get around all his obstacles, leaping over the wire fence, digging under the wooden fence, and swimming through his moat."   Despite their long absence, Primrose refuses to believe that her parents are dead, insisting that they are merely lost at sea and will return to her soon. "Primrose finds comfort in familiar surroundings and acquaintances, such as her mothball-scented former foster mother, Miss Perfidy, and Miss Bowzer, owner and chef at the town restaurant, where everything is served on a waffle." • MacDonald, Margaret Read. Fat Cat: A Danish Folktale. Illus. by Julie Paschkis. August House, 2001. 3-6 yrs
  A fat cat eats his way through 35 pies, a washerwoman and her laundry, a company of soldiers, a king and his elephant , and even his friend Mouse---who uses her scissors to snip her way back out (and rescue the others) and her needle and thread to sew her overeating friend up again. (BCCB 11/01)
• Osborne, Mary Pope. Kate and the Beanstalk. Illus. by Giselle Potter. Schwartz/Atheneum, 2000. 5-8 yrs
  In this retelling of the familiar tale about Jack and the Beanstalk, Osborne introduces Kate as "a plucky girl who loved to help." She manages to more than help her family, retrieving riches from the giant's castle in the clouds and making her mother very happy. (BCCB 1/01)
• Root, Phyllis. Kiss the Cow! Illus. by Will Hillenbrand. Candlewick, 2000. 5-8 yrs
  Annalisa is puzzled by the way her mother treats Luella, their family cow. "Not only does Mama May offer the cow songs of request and gratitude at every milking, she also kisses Luella 'right on the end of her velvety, brown nose.'" When Annalisa does the milking but refuses to do the kissing, Luella stops making milk until Annalisa relents and kisses the cow. (BCCB 1/01)
• Waring, Richard. Hungry Hen. Illus. by Caroline Jayne Church. HarperCollins, 2002. 3-6 yrs
  A greedy fox watches and waits nearby while a hungry hen eats and eats, growing bigger everyday. To the fox's dismay, he finds that the hungry hen is a little bigger and a little hungrier than he expected, and fox is forced to go without a chicken dinner. (BCCB 3/02)
• Williams, Sue. Dinnertime! Illus. by Kerry Argent. Harcourt, 2002. 3-6 yrs
  In rhyming text with a repeatable refrain, Williams relates the story of six little rabbits who run away from a hungry fox. They disappear one by one, until the reassuring ending shows that all the little rabbits have made it underground to their cozy burrow, where their mother has their dinner waiting. (BCCB 4/02)
• Yorinks, Arthur. Company's Going. Illus. by David Small. Hyperion, 2001. Gr. 2-4
  In this sequel to Company's Coming, the aliens that visited Moe and Shirley are leaving earth to return to their home planet of Nextoo. However, they can't bear to leave Shirley's wonderful meatballs behind, and they transport Moe and Shirley to their distant planet so that Shirley can cater a wedding. (BCCB 1/02)
