	The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Living in the City: An Urban Life Dozen --selected by Cindy Welch Jobs, playtime, even travel from place to place can be a different kind of experience in a city environment. This month's dozens explore life on the urban side of the street.

• Bial, Raymond Tenement: Immigrant Life on the Lower East Side; written and illus. with photographs by Raymond Bial Houghton, 2002 Gr. 4-8
  Bial's eloquent photoessay gives visuals to the stories of how new immigrants to the United States often found themselves living in airless, lightless high-rise buildings on New York's Lower East Side as they endured poverty in the hope of a better life. (BCCB 11/02)

  The legendary Dick, mayor of London, goes as a lad to the city to make his fortune and earns part of it when he is rewarded for sending his sole possession - his cat - off on a trading ship. (BCCB 9/06)

• Prince, April Jones Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing; illus. by François Roca Houghton, 2005 5-9 yrs
  In 1884, P.T. Barnum walked twenty-one elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge, proving once and for all that the bridge was soundly built. (BCCB 10/05)

  Besides naming cities, city names often mean something; sometimes they are words from other languages, or sometimes they are cobbled together from many places. What does your city name mean? (BCCB 11/05)
