The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books |
| The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist
available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully
fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their
philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them
to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Please feel free to copy, download,
or link to these lists. We ask only that you cite the source. See the archive for lists from previous months.

To Run with Wolves Last month we looked at the Big Bad Wolf commonly found in folk and fairy tales. This month we look at books that present a different view of this animal. Most of the nonfiction on this list directly addresses the image of the ferocious and rapacious wolf gorging himself on sundry pigs and small children and counters those myths with facts about the real life in and out of the wolf den. The fiction often shows humans and wolves bonding, while the picture books use their wolfy protagonists to address human issues. No matter which ones you choose, you'll be tempted to let the wolf in the next time he comes knocking at your door. ----Debra Mitts Smith |
