	The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Show Me the Money: Capitalist Kids --selected by April Spisak A lot has been said about money: money is the root of all evil; a penny saved is a penny earned; when money speaks, the truth keeps silent. This collection of fiction, nonfiction, and picture books looks at the intersection of cold hard cash and kids, a sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes funny combination.

  Greg has always had a talent for making money, and his newest idea, creating and selling miniature comic books, is a surefire hit. Now if only he can keep everyone from ruining his big plans, he is sure to strike it rich this time. (BCCB 11/05)

• Curtis, Christopher Paul. Mr. Chickee’s Funny Money. Lamb, 2005. Gr. 4-7
  Despite the doubts of the adults, Steven is certain that the quadrillion dollar bill (featuring a picture of James Brown) he's been given is real. Turns out that he's right, and he now finds himself deep in a mystery involving inept feds, a canine sidekick, and a fantastic spying machine. (BCCB 12/05)

• Flake, Sharon. Money Hungry. Jump at the Sun/Hyperon, 2001. Gr. 6-8
  Thirteen-year-old Raspberry Hill, obsessed with accruing money in order to keep her family from homelessness, hoards away every penny, but her focus on cash is obstructing her life. There is also a sequel, Begging for Change .

• Greene, Stephanie. Owen Foote, Money Man. illus. by Martha Weston. Clarion, 2000. Gr. 2-4
  Owen used to want to be a paleontologist, but now that he is in the third grade, all he wants to be is rich. (BCCB 10/00)

• Gutman, Dan. . The Get Rich Quick Club. HarperCollins, 2004. Gr. 4-6
  Eleven-year-old Gina, the mastermind of the titular club, has a clear goal: “Other kids want to be in the Olympics, or they want to become rock stars or presidents. Good for them, I want to be a millionaire.”

• Karlitz, Gai . Growing Money: A Complete Investing Guide for Kids. Price Stern Sloan, 2000. Gr. 4-6
  Karlitz has put together a helpful first look at investing for young entrepreneurs that combines charts, investing terms, and kid-friendly language into an effective and uncondescending guide.

• Mason, Simon. The Quigleys Not For Sale; illus. by Helen Stephens. Fickling, 2004. Gr. 2-4
  Among the varied adventures of this quirky British family are the attempts of Lucy and Will to strike it rich, with plans from reselling soda (tiny cups at a time from large bottles) to drawing tattoos on schoolmates. (BCCB 1/05)

• Rockwell, Thomas. How to Eat Fried Worms. Watts, 1973. Gr. 4-7
  This still-hilarious book introduces readers to one of the original money-hungry kids, Billy, and his quest to eat fifteen worms in as many days for a $50 prize.

• Schwartz, Amy. Bea and Mr. Jones; written and illus. by Amy Schwartz. Bradbury, 1982. 5-7 yrs
  Bea and her father decide to switch places, with her father content as the new teacher's pet and Bea truly shining as the brilliant executive with an eye for common-sense decisions. (BCCB 10/82)

• Viorst, Judith. Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday; written and illus. by Judith Viorst. Atheneum, 1978. 5-7 yrs
  Alexander starts his week as a wealthy man with a dollar burning a hole in his pocket. Unfortunately, great plans give way to numerous small purchases, and his riches slip away, leaving him with only a melted candle and regret. (BCCB 6/78)

• Williams, Rozanne Lanczak. The Coin Counting Book. Charlesbridge, 2001. 4-7 yrs s
  Intended for the youngest of penny pinchers, this book is a useful introduction not only to counting and spending coins but also to saving money.
  
• Williams, Vera B. A Chair for My Mother;written and illus. by Vera B. Williams. Greenwillow, 1982. 4-8 yrs
  After a family loses all of their furniture in a fire, they must rebuild their lives in this classic Caldecott Honor book. (BCCB 12/82)
