The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books |
| The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist
available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully
fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their
philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them
to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Please feel free to copy, download,
or link to these lists. We ask only that you cite the source. See the archive for lists from previous months.

Crowned Heads: The Life and Times of Princesses and
Queens While fairy-tale princesses and queens may have to deal with spiteful fairies, charmed frogs, and scheming stepmothers, at least they have magic or luck or both on their sides. The real-life princesses and queens featured in this month's Dozen's have no prince charming or fairy godmothers to rescue them. Instead most of these princesses learned at an early age that the only person they could depend on was themselves. The wills of royal parents and the interests of state often dictated whom and when a princess would marry. As some of their stories testify, divorce or sibling rivalry within a royal family could be downright deadly. Readers who like intrigue and danger amidst a royal setting are sure to find it in this month's selections. |
